As usual i'll be looking at a rarer unit, and if you hadn't already noticed by the clever visual-clues up there ^^^ then this article is on the Orks smaller friends, the 'Grots' :) (or 'Gretchin'). So here's what i think of this quirky little unit that screams 'Cannon Fodder!!!' with a capital 'Waaaagh!'...
The thing that immediately strikes me about them is just how cheap they are; at HALF the points of an un-upgraded Ork Boy (or Gaunt) they're as cheap as you can get for Infantry. This generally means that you can have LOTS of these little guys, and besides the fact they have no save, are S2 and T2 they are actually quite useful (quite...).
In my eyes there are two ways to use these:
- Stick 'em in a building (probably one of your objectives) and laugh as the enemy try to decide whether to shoot the 30 Boys, the other 30 Boys or the 30 Grots. Most opponents will choose the boys (if they have any sense) and this is good, it means you've held that objective while he shoots blindly at your Boys.. :)
-OR-
-Cannon Fodder. Seriously, with a squad of 30 (forgetting the Runtherds) coming in at less than 100 pts you can get quite a few into your list for very little cost. Now, remeber that silly coherency rule (all members of a unit must remain within 2" of each other) ??? Well, this works to your advantage, discounting base size etc. you can stretch a squad of 30 to a 60" line, which will completely cover most game-boards! This means your Boys can advance in safety behind the Grots (or at least with a cover save) and march right across the board!!
Either way you've got yourself a nice tactic! Now some people say these Grots are good shots, which they are (better) at BS3, but dont be fooled, with a weapon that is only S3 AP- range 12" your not going to do much damage to anything, so dont bet on these killing much.
So, while not so 'killy' (what are Boys for, right?) they ARE quite useful for other reasons. So why not slip some of these little guys into your next game and see how they do?
Thanks for reading Guys,

P.S. If you've made it this far down the article, you're obviously either interested or extremely bored, either way, leave me a comment on what you think or what units/codex you would like to see next and I'll get back to you.
